S'pore Idol: Best local comedy? --Taken From The Electric New Paper--
SINGAPORE Idol premiered right after the rousing National Day Parade.
And what a parade it turned out to be.
Instead of the good, the bad and the ugly, the first half of the auditions for the pop talent show paraded the rude, the bad and the ugly - and certainly the hilarious as well.
Indeed the stage was set for maximum entertainment impact, with cunning editing playing up the assortment of extreme characters culled from a Shakespearean dramatis personae (heavy storm included).
As judge Ken Lim - who has the odd habit of peering over his glasses like a granny - so aptly told a contestant: 'It's not about what you like, but about what the people like.'
As if on cue, tone-deaf contestants hankering for pop stardom went frighteningly out of pitch, spanked themselves on the thighs to get into rhythm, and forgot their lyrics - or rather, re-arranged the lyrics of Take That's Back For Good into a personal ode to pimple-squeezing like one fellow did.
AMUSING HOWLERS
There were tears and fears: One boy was so stressed out he fainted and lay on a stretcher, while a mousy girl burst into tears before and during her audition.
Ms Sherrie Lee, a 27-year-old teacher, said she was 'laughing her head off' at the howlers.
'I really enjoyed it because it was so funny. The producers chose the audition segments really well.'
Engineer Alicia Leong, 25, called Singapore Idol the best local comedy ever.
She said: 'A lot of them can't sing to save their lives, so what were they thinking to go through all that torture? I take my hat off to them that they can be so thick-skinned, brave and open to humiliation.
'I thought Singaporeans would be reserved, conservative and shy, so I'm amazed that they are showing such a different side.
'I'm also happy that the panel is so critical. If they are polite in their comments, then the audiences will end up doing the criticising, and the judges won't be doing their jobs.'
Indeed, it's obvious that Ken Lim, Dick Lee, Florence Lian and Douglas Oliveiro have been diligently boning up on their 'How-To-Be-A-Simon-Cowell' manuals what with their suspiciously-rehearsed, smark-alecky barbs.
Dick certainly qualifies as Singapore's Simon, dashing dreams of his unfortunate victims with perfectly-timed zingers like 'Your enthusiasm is infectious, but so's a deadly disease' or 'Luckily that rose on your shirt is artificial, if not it'd be dead'.
Florence also displayed the prickly side reserved only for the hopeless ('That performance lagi cannot make it'; 'I'm going to send you my doctor's bill for destroying my eardrums).
But manager Lim Shien Yau, 29, felt that there was no chemistry between the judges.
'They were making independent comments, and don't relate as well to each other as the American Idol judges.'
He also added: 'I don't like the fact that it shows the bad ones more than the promising ones just for the sake of ratings. The guy who took off his clothes was a bit much for prime-time TV.'
Indeed, the precious few talents who made it through to Caldecott Hill came in blink-and-you'll-miss-it portions.
There was Christopher Lee, the clean-cut boy-band-type who claimed he sang at Zoe Tay's wedding.
Sweetheart Joanna Dong was a breath of fresh air with her crystal-clear voice, but was told to 'ditch the auntie getup'.
Tomboyish Olinda Cho, a Fame Awards also-ran who believes she was 'born for Singapore Idol', also impressed with her deep, sultry rendition of Dance With Me.
Despite such rough diamonds, viewers felt the star quality on display in the first episode left much to be desired.
Ms Lee said that although their voices were good, they 'didn't stand out in terms of looks and packaging'.
Mr Adriel Chua, a 24-year-old graphic designer, also doesn't think 'there'll be another Stefanie Sun emerging from this talent competition.'
But Mr Daniel Woon, 28, a chef, begged to differ: 'There'll not only be one star, but many stars who may not be the crowd's choice but will still become famous.'
Or infamous, for that matter.
Instead of looking forward to the nation's next singing sensation, viewers seem more eager to tune in to Singapore Idol to take digs at their fellow Singaporeans and look out for the next joker to fall flat on his face.
Mr Chua is one of them. He said: 'I can't wait to see who the (masked) Banana Man is!'
