Simple Advice:
There are a lot of important things to remember when looking for the perfect girl. I'm not an expert by far, nor am I overly successful. Most of my friends are female, and every girl inevitably finds something wrong with that.
My simple rules are this:
1. If she can't except your friends, she's not worth it. Straight and true. She has to like you for who you are, who you are includes your friends. I dated a girl who always got upset at how late my friends would keep me. Always blamed them for it no matter how many times I told her it was my choice. Very bad situation there.
2. Make sure you've got the right things in the right places. I've seen a lot of comments about being honest and a few about sharing your goals. All those are true, but one that is important that most people don't think about is religion. This is a tough subject, but I've learned the hard way. No matter how unimportant it might be to you, it's probably important to the girl. For instance... The girl is Christian, you're not. This is a classic example of a situation that won't work. There is only two ways this can work, either you convert, or she abandons her faith. Unfortunately this is how things go. I'm not saying bring up religion on the first date, but if you find out later that she's zealous about some religion that you're not, you'd better consider just being friends. Eventually she'll want you to change, whether you want to or not.
3. This is going to sound incredibly shallow, and maybe it is, but it has to be said. If you're not attracted to a girl physically, mentally, and emotionally, it's not worth it. All three are equally important. You can't be draw to a mind without a body or emotions without a mind or any thing along those lines. Heck, if she doesn't turn you on with a look, then how are you ever going to be truly happy? It's sad that it is this way, but you can't have a serious relationship if you aren't attracted in all three ways.
4. Last but not least. If you have nothing in common, or at the very least, feel like you can't do your hobbies because of a girl you're dating, then maybe it's time to stop dating the girl. You should never feel like she is keeping you from something you love, or someone for that matter. If you have always gone out on friday nights with your buddies, don't abandon them just because the girl is jealous of your time. You have a right to be yourself and have your life as much as she does. Women always say we have no right to control them, but it works both ways.
Oh yeah, and one last side note. As strange as this sounds, women love silly arguments. There is this one girl I know that always insists she's right on stupid things, not because she really thinks that, but because she knows I'll always argue with her. It's become a silly game that by my participating tells her that I care. Also, women seem to love silly little things that surprise them. I'm not talking about gifts, I'm talking about actions. For instance, randomly meow at a girl sometime. If she likes you she'll probably find it to be terribly cute. If not she'll just call you a nut case and it'll be done with then and there. Ever tried purring?
